Dua List for Hajj and Umrah: Authentic Supplications Every Pilgrim Should Know

Hajj and Umrah are among the greatest acts of worship in Islam. They are not only journeys of movement, but journeys of the heart. One of the most beautiful parts of these sacred pilgrimages is making du'a — asking Allah for forgiveness, guidance, mercy, and acceptance. Allah says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." That is why du'a is one of the most important spiritual actions during Hajj and Umrah. (Sunnah.com)

A good du'a guide should be simple, authentic, and practical. It should help pilgrims know what is established in the Sunnah, and also remind them that they can make personal du'a in their own language at almost every stage of the journey. (Islam-QA)

Dua Before Travel

When beginning the journey, the well-known Sunnah travel du'a includes glorifying Allah for making travel possible and asking Him for righteousness, piety, ease, and protection during the journey. This is the more specific prophetic travel du'a than the short phrase often used when simply leaving home. (Sunnah.com)

A shorter general du'a for leaving one's home is also known. Still, for a Hajj or Umrah travel article, the stronger and more relevant wording is the travel supplication reported from the Prophet ﷺ when setting out on a journey. (Sunnah.com)

Entering Ihram

When entering the Ihram, the important thing is to form the intention in the heart for Hajj or Umrah. It is not necessary to say a long spoken formula like "O Allah, I intend Umrah." The safer Sunnah-based guidance is to make the intention inwardly and then begin the Talbiyah according to what you intend. (Islam-QA)

For example, if you are entering Ihram for Umrah, you may begin with "Labbayka' Umratan" in the sense of the Talbiyah for Umrah. If for Hajj, "Labbayka Hajjan" is mentioned in later fiqh explanation. (Islam-QA)

Talbiyah

The central dhikr of Ihram is the Talbiyah:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Transliteration: Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.

Meaning: Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, you have no partner, here I am. Truly, all praise, blessing, and dominion belong to You. You have no partner. (Sunnah.com)

Men are encouraged to raise their voices with Talbiyah, while women should say it quietly enough for themselves or nearby women to hear. (Islam-QA)

Du'as During Tawaf

One of the most common mistakes in du'a lists is giving a separate fixed du'a for each round of Tawaf. There is no authentic fixed du'a for every circuit. A pilgrim may recite Qur'an, make dhikr, and ask Allah for any good in this world and the Hereafter. (Islam-QA)

The best-known reported du'a in Tawaf is the one said between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Meaning: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. (Sunnah.com)

When coming to the Black Stone, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Allahu Akbar." (Sunnah.com)

Du'as for Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

When approaching Safa, the Prophet ﷺ recited the verse:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

Then he said: "Abda'u bima bada'allahu bih" — I begin with what Allah began with. After climbing Safa enough to face the Kaaba, he made takbir, tahlil, and du'a. (Sunnah.com)

The reported dhikr at Safa and Marwah includes:

Then the Prophet ﷺ made personal du'a, repeated this three times, and did the same on Marwah. (Sunnah.com)

Again, there is no fixed du'a for each stretch of Sa'i. Personal du'a is allowed throughout. (Islam-QA)

Best Du'a on the Day of Arafah

The Prophet ﷺ said that the best du'a is the du'a of the Day of Arafah, and the best thing he and the prophets before him said is:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.

Meaning: There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things powerful. (Sunnah.com)

This is one of the most important supplications to include in any Hajj du'a list.

Dhikr at Muzdalifah

At Muzdalifah, the Sunnah is not a single fixed du'a phrase. Rather, the Prophet ﷺ stood at al-Mash'ar al-Haram, faced the qiblah, and engaged in du'a, takbir, tahlil, and tawhid until the morning light became clear. (Sunnah.com)

So the most accurate guidance is: at Muzdalifah, remember Allah abundantly, glorify Him, proclaim His oneness, and make heartfelt personal du'a. (Sunnah.com)

At the Jamarat

When throwing each pebble at the Jamarat, the Prophet ﷺ said:

اللهُ أَكْبَر

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar.

After the first and second Jamarat, he would move ahead, face the qiblah, raise his hands, and make du'a. After Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, he left without standing there for du'a. (Sunnah.com)

Du'a When Slaughtering the Sacrifice

When slaughtering or offering a sacrifice, the reported wording is:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، [اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَلَكَ]، اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي

Transliteration: Bismillah wallahu Akbar, [Allahumma minka wa laka], Allahumma taqabbal minni.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, from You and to You. O Allah, accept it from me. (Sunnah.com)

Du'a When Returning Home

When returning from travel, the Prophet ﷺ said:

آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Transliteration: Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.

Meaning: We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord. (Sunnah.com)

Important Note for Pilgrims

You do not need to memorize long lists to have an accepted Hajj or Umrah. The most important thing is sincerity. You may make du'a in Arabic or in your own language. If you forget a specific wording, ask Allah from your heart. There is also no need to force yourself into artificial formulas for every moment of the pilgrimage. (Islam-QA)

Conclusion

A good du'a list for Hajj and Umrah should help pilgrims focus on what is authentic, simple, and spiritually meaningful. The strongest parts of the list are the Talbiyah, the du'a between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone, the dhikr at Safa and Marwah, the best du'a of Arafah, the dhikr at Muzdalifah, the takbir at the Jamarat, the du'a at sacrifice, and the du'a when returning home.
