Who Is Allowed to Perform Umrah?

Eligibility for Umrah: Who Can Perform It?

There are a few things that determine who can do Umrah. Before going on the trip, Muslims must meet certain requirements. The following are the conditions.

1. Muslim Faith

First and foremost, only Muslims are eligible to perform Umrah. This pilgrimage is an act of worship, and as such, only those who have embraced Islam are permitted to undertake it.

2. Maturity

A person must have reached the age of maturity, known in Islamic terms as "Buloogh". In many countries, this is usually when a person reaches puberty. While the Quran does not specify an age for performing Umrah, it is generally accepted that children under the age of maturity are not obliged to perform Umrah unless their guardians accompany them.

"وَأَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ لِذِكْرِي" "And establish the prayer for My remembrance." (Quran, Surah Taha 20:14)

This verse reminds Muslims that they must start doing acts of worship when they become adults.

3. Physical and Mental Fitness

To perform Umrah, a person must be in good health. This includes both physical and mental fitness. You need to be in good shape to do Umrah because it involves a lot of walking, standing, and other physical acts of worship. A pilgrim should be able to handle the physical demands of the trip.

Some travel agencies offer special services to help people with medical conditions or disabilities do Umrah comfortably.

4. Financial Ability

You need a certain amount of money to perform Umrah. The person must be able to pay for their travel, lodging, food, and other necessities. If someone is in debt or can't afford the trip without a lot of trouble, they don't have to do Umrah.

One important factor to consider when deciding whether someone is eligible is whether they can pay for the trip to Makkah and other costs.

"لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا" "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." (Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286)

This verse emphasizes how easy it is to fulfill Islamic duties, ensuring that people don't have to do more than they can handle.

5. Safety and Security

The pilgrimage must be performed in safety. If there is a risk of harm due to political instability, war, or health threats (such as during pandemics), then performing Umrah may not be advisable. Islamic scholars and religious authorities usually advise people not to undertake the pilgrimage if it may put their life or health at risk.

Who Can Go for Umrah in 2025?

In 2025, the rules on who can perform Umrah may change, especially amid concerns about health and travel restrictions worldwide. But the basic requirements for eligibility haven't changed much:

  • Adults: Muslims who are adults, meaning they have reached the age of puberty, and are physically and mentally fit.
  • Financially Capable: Those who can afford the journey without causing hardship to themselves or their families.
  • Women: Women are eligible to perform Umrah, but there are specific guidelines about their travel. Women under 45 must be accompanied by a Mahram (a male relative, such as a husband, father, brother, or son). If the group is trustworthy, women over 45 can travel with no Mahram.

Requirements for Performing Umrah

If you're wondering what you need to do to do Umrah, here are the most important steps and requirements:

1. Niyaa (Intention)

Before starting the journey, you should make the intention to do Umrah in your heart and mind. This intention is very important because every act of worship in Islam must be done with sincerity for Allah's sake alone.

2. Ihram

Ihram is the state of spiritual purity that you need to be in for both Umrah and Hajj. Pilgrims must put on Ihram, which means wearing special clothes and not doing things like cutting their hair, clipping their nails, or having sex, before they can enter the holy area of Makkah.

3. Tawaf and Sa'i

One of the main rituals of Umrah is Tawaf, during which pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction. After completing Tawaf, they perform Sa'i, walking back and forth seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.

"إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ" "Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the rites of Allah." (Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158)

This verse emphasizes the importance of Sa'i, making it a key part of Umrah.

4. Shaving/Cutting Hair

After performing Tawaf and Sa'i, men on the pilgrimage must shave their heads or cut their hair. Women pilgrims should cut a small piece of their hair.

5. Tahallul (Exiting Ihram)

Once the rituals are completed, pilgrims exit the state of Ihram by performing certain activities, marking the end of the Umrah journey.

Special Cases: Can Someone Perform Umrah on Behalf of Others?

In certain cases, people may wish to perform Umrah on behalf of others, especially if they are unable to do so due to illness, age, or other reasons. According to Islamic law, a person may perform Umrah on behalf of someone else—whether they are alive or deceased—provided the necessary conditions are fulfilled, and the intention is made sincerely for that person.

Conclusion:

In summary, a person becomes eligible to perform Umrah when several basic conditions are met. These include being a Muslim, reaching maturity, having the physical ability and financial means, and ensuring that the journey is safe. When these requirements are fulfilled, any Muslim can undertake the blessed journey of Umrah.

"فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ" "So remember Me; I will remember you." (Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:152)

This verse encourages us to remember Allah throughout our lives and to seek His blessings, including the great opportunity to perform Umrah.

May Allah (SWT) grant you the ability to perform Umrah if it is in your best interest. May this pilgrimage bring peace, spiritual growth, and blessings to your life.
